Join fellow alumni at Sports & Social DC on U Street to watch Stanford (0-1) against #26/25 BYU (1-0)! Stanford is coming off a 20-23 loss to Hawaii in their season opener. BYU is coming off a 69-0 win against FCS Portland State.
Stanford is 2-1 against BYU all-time. BYU won the last game in 2022.
The following week, we will watch Stanford (0-1) against Boston College (1-0)!
Stanford is 2-2 against Boston College all-time. BC won the last game in 2002.

Please plan on arriving between 6:00 PM and 6:15PM to check in. The boat will be leaving promptly at 6:30PM!! The boat will arrive back at the dock at 8:30PM.

Cancellations are permitted for a full refund up through Wednesday, September 3.
Refunds will not be provided for late arrivals or no shows!

Dock Directions:
Meet us on the dock at the Washington Harbor. We will board in the commercial vessel boarding zone at Georgetown Waterfront (Washington Harbor). The closest street address is 3100 K St. NW DC, 20007 & the cross streets are 31st and K St. From there, you want to continue down 31st Street by foot. At the end of 31st, you'll see the dock. Boarding is on the left, in front of the Fiola Mare Restaurant & Nick's Riverside Grill. There are many paid parking garages nearby.
WHAT TO BRING/WEAR
Make sure to bring a valid ID NOTE: This is very important - the boat crew may check your ID before you board the boat!
Wear practical shoes since you are boarding a boat!
It may get breezy - feel free to bring a light jacket.
Restrooms on-board.

During the recent WDCA event Insider's View with Andrew Luck, Stanford's first Football General Manager enthusiastically mentioned that he would be attending an alumni event in the DMV prior to the UVA game. Sure enough, WDCSA will welcome Andrew as the team prepares to face the University of Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, September 20th. Andrew is excited to hear from you as alumni and residents of the region.
The setting will be both informal and electric: the world of college football is evolving each month, and no one is closer to its pulse! The UVA game will be Stanford's 4th game of the season and their 2nd game against an ACC opponent.
Mission - Navy Yard will host us with an array of serious appetizers and a cash bar.
Cost: WDCSA paid members - $37.50, Others - $47.50

The September book is Many Thousands Gone: The First Two Centuries of Slavery in North America, by Ira Berlin; Belknap Press, 1998. Available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions, but not audiobook.
Today most Americans, black and white, identify slavery with cotton, the deep South, and the African-American church. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, few slaves grew cotton, lived in the deep South, or embraced Christianity. Many Thousands Gone traces the evolution of black society from the first arrivals in the early seventeenth century through the Revolution and reveals the diverse forms that slavery and freedom assumed in the days before cotton was king. As the nature of the slaves’ labor changed with place and time, so did the relationship between slave and master, and between slave and society.

We are reading Mind of the Raven: Investigations and Adventures with Wolf-Birds by Bernd Heinrich, an award-winning naturalist. “Much like a sleuth. Heinrich involves us in his quest, letting one clue lead to the next. But as animals can only be spied on by getting quite close, Heinrich adopts ravens, thereby becoming a 'raven father,' as well as observing them in their natural habitat, studying their daily routines, and in the process painting a vivid picture of the world as lived by the ravens. At the heart of this book are Heinrich’s love and respect for these complex and engaging creatures, and through his keen observation and analysis, we become their intimates too. (From book cover)
