Washington DC Summer Networking Mixer

Whether you’re local or in town for the summer, come and mingle with fellow Cardinals. Stanford Angels & Entrepreneurs United and Washington DC Stanford Association are excited support this follow-up mixer to connect and empower the Stanford startup and alumni community in the DMV.

During the recent WDCA event Insider's View with Andrew Luck, Stanford's first Football General Manager enthusiastically mentioned that he would be attending an alumni event in the DMV prior to the UVA game. Sure enough, WDCSA will welcome Andrew as the team prepares to face the University of Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, September 20th. Andrew is excited to hear from you as alumni and residents of the region.
The setting will be both informal and electric: the world of college football is evolving each month, and no one is closer to its pulse! The UVA game will be Stanford's 4th game of the season and their 2nd game against an ACC opponent.
Mission - Navy Yard will host us with an array of serious appetizers and a cash bar.

Stanford Cardinal at University of Virginia Football
Bus Ride

You are invited to travel with Washington, DC alumni who will be attending the Stanford - UVA football game without the hassle of driving roughly 2 1/2 hours each way and parking!
WDCSA has reserved a mini bus for your convenience that will depart from and return to this Orange Line Metro station, where parking is free on Saturdays. The bus will either drop passengers off near Scott Stadium or at a parking lot from which free stadium shuttles will be available.
*Since the game start time has not yet been announced, the pickup and return times are 9:00 am and 9:00 pm, respectively. When the start time is announced, we will notify those who have reserved seats and adjust the pickup and return times.

Washington DC Book Club Discussion

Meeting at a private home in Silver Spring, Md.
The August book is Demon Copperhead: A Novel, by Barbara Kingsolver; Harper Perennial, 2022. Available in hardcover, paperback, audiobook, and Kindle.
This book follows the life of Damon Fields, nicknamed ‘Demon Copperhead,’ a boy with copper-colored hair born in southern Appalachia. Copperhead (clearly named after David Copperfield) braves the perils of growing up in poverty, including foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Throughout this coming-of-age novel, the rug is constantly pulled out from under him, but Damon has Olympian reserves of endurance that allow him to survive. This book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2023.

We are reading Mind of the Raven: Investigations and Adventures with Wolf-Birds by Bernd Heinrich, an award-winning naturalist. “Much like a sleuth. Heinrich involves us in his quest, letting one clue lead to the next. But as animals can only be spied on by getting quite close, Heinrich adopts ravens, thereby becoming a 'raven father,' as well as observing them in their natural habitat, studying their daily routines, and in the process painting a vivid picture of the world as lived by the ravens. At the heart of this book are Heinrich’s love and respect for these complex and engaging creatures, and through his keen observation and analysis, we become their intimates too. (From book cover)
