WDCSA and the Washington DC Cal Alumni Club collaborate each year to bring you a fun
Big Game event: admittedly, it is more fun in some years than others. 
This year we'll ask all attendees to be WDCSA members (who can register guests). All members will receive a coupon good for $5.00 toward drinks and a chance for Stanford branded premiums.
We will know the location soon, though we may have to wait until the week before the game to know the start time. Look for an update sent to all who are part of the WDCSA Stanford Groups community soon!

Little Known Election Facts’ Impact on Results, Realities, and Perceptions

Public trust in the fairness and accuracy of US elections is central to the health of our democracy. Most of the responsibility for providing secure and fair elections resides with local election officials. But in recent years, trust is being eroded by the spread of disinformation about both local election workers and procedures. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that most Americans know almost nothing about how elections actually operate and the security measures that are in place.
Join us to hear why some of the basic facts about local election administration, including systemic issues, the election workforce, and variation in state election laws, will be important in understanding what happens on Election Day. And, as Election Week 2024 unfolds, news will be driven by both the tallied results and the response to the outcome.
Panelists:
Nancy Tate ’70 served as the Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of the United States for 15 years. She is currently the Chair of the Elections Working Group at the National Academy of Public Administration.
Doyle McManus ’74 is a freelance writer who after five years as a foreign correspondent in the Middle East, moved to the Washington bureau of the Los Angeles Times in 1983, where he covered the U.S. State Department and White House until stepping into the role of Washington Bureau Chief from 1996-2008. Doyle has written for Foreign Policy, Time, Sports Illustrated, and The London Daily Express, and his work has won awards from the National Press Club and the American Academy of Diplomacy. He has served on Stanford’s Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board of the Freeman Spogli Institute.

Washington DC Book Club Discussion

The book for our December meeting is Euler's Gem: The Polyhedron Formula and the Birth of Topology by David Richeson. Princeton University Press, 2008 (paperback edition 2019), 336 pages. Available in hardbound, paperback, and Kindle editions.
This book is a history and celebration of topology, which is a loose and flexible version of geometry. Euler’s polyhedron formula, discovered in 1750, evolved from a curiosity to an essential transition from geometry to topology and serves as the guiding principle for this history. Along the way, Richeson introduces us to the stories and contributions of history’s greatest mathematicians: Pythagoras, Euclid, Kepler, Descartes, Euler, Cauchy, Gauss, Riemann, and Poincaré. Large leaps, corrections, missteps, and incremental progress illustrate the excitement of discovery, as a new field of mathematics emerged from the old. This book was written for a general audience and requires only high-school level mathematics (most of which will be irrelevant).

We are reading Candace Pert: Genius, Greed, and Madness in the World of Science by Pamela Ryckman. “Pert (1) discovered the opiate receptor (the mechanism by which opioids function in the brain), launching the opioid crisis, (2) proved the mind-body link, launching the field of integrative or functional medicine, and (3) created Peptide T, the underground AIDS drug featured in the film Dallas Buyers Club, and then went rogue, becoming a linchpin the the black market for her drug. Pert was sabotaged by mentors and colleagues keen to profit from her brilliance. But she too became tainted, believing that her noble ends would justify devious means. Like a mythic hero, she succumbed to a fatal flaw, and her greatest strengths - singularity of purpose and blind faith in her own virtuosity - would prove to be her undoing.” (From book cover)
