Stanford DC Cardinal Teams Want You!
The Capitol Alumni Network offers Cardinal alumni the opportunity to compete against other coed alumni in football, volleyball, soccer, basketball and softball.
While we love to win, we get more out of bonding while competing. Join us, even if you feel you aren’t “good” enough but love running, jumping or swinging a bat. We are especially in great need of Stanford women to compete.
Soccer and football are typically played in the Fall. Basketball season begins in January. Softball typically begins in April. Go Card!

This is the only combined ATP & WTA 500 tournament in the world.
WDCSA has the same six platinum box seats to all sessions that we have had since 2004 (Aisle 36, Section 3). The seats are at the end of the court and very close to the court (in the third and fourth row) and provide access to the air-conditioned restaurant. We also have eight upper-level seats (Section 6, Row N) near the top of the stadium in the corner.
The featured matches are held on the stadium court where seating is reserved, with the remainder on the outside courts where seating is open.

Stanford-Cal Bay Area Baseball Bash

Join us for a Stanford-Cal Bay Area Baseball Bash when the Washington Nationals play the San Francisco Giants! We have reserved group tickets in Section 416 of Nats Park.
Stop by the Royal Sands Social Club across the street from the ballpark starting at 5pm for a happy hour (tell them you're there for the "Bay Area Baseball Bash" and they'll point you in the right direction). The game begins at 6:45pm. All are welcome!

Stand Up Paddle Lesson

Each person will get a board, paddle, and life jacket. Your instructor will begin with a demonstration on land for you to know what to expect during the session, and will assess the needs and interests of the individuals in the group to ensure that everyone has a good time! You'll then get on the water to be shown and have an opportunity to practice basic paddling techniques. Here is the link to the B'more SUP website and the course registration.
Cost: $60. Class may be limited to 6 students.
When you register (please note that the question asking if you are a 'member' is unrelated to WDSCA: this SUP class is being offered at one price for all participants), you'll receive a confirmation email that discusses what to expect during the class and includes a waiver to review and sign. On the day of class, August 11, please arrive at 9:45 with your waivers completed so the class can start right at 10:00 am.

Karlie Samuelson helped lead Stanford to two Final Fours, before going undrafted in 2017. She currently plays for the Washington Mystics and previously played for the Sparks. She additionally has a successful career playing overseas, winning the EuroCup Championship and Finals MVP this year.
Cameron Brink had a storied career at Stanford, winning numerous accolades, including the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year as a senior, and is the Cardinal's all-time leading shot blocker. Stanford won an NCAA Championship in her first year and went to a second Final Four, before she was selected 2nd overall by the Sparks in this year's draft.

Meet us on the dock at the Washington Harbor. We will board in the commercial vessel boarding zone at Georgetown Waterfront (Washington Harbor). The closest street address is 3100 K St. NW DC, 20007 & the cross streets are 31st and K St. From there, you want to continue down 31st Street by foot. At the end of 31st, you'll see the dock. Boarding is on the left, in front of the Fiola Mare Restaurant & Nick's Riverside Grill. There are many paid parking garages nearby. https://www.ridetheboomerang.com
Bring a valid ID. Wear practical shoes since you are boarding a boat with stairs. There are restrooms on-board.

WDCSA Book Club Corner
Washington DC Book Club Discussion

The September book is The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows: Random House, 2008, 274 pages. Available as an audiobook or Kindle electronic book, as well as in paper and hardback editions.
In June 1946, writer Juliet Ashton (a fictional character) began a correspondence with a stranger on the British island of Guernsey, a stranger who has come across her name in an old book. Through him, she learns about the ‘Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society,’ born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi during WWII when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives.

We are reading What You Have Heard is True: A Memoir of Witness and Resistance by Carolyn Forché. This book “is a devastating, lyrical, and visionary memoir about a young woman’s brave choice to engage with horror in order to help others. Written by one of the most gifted poets of her generation, this is the story of a woman’s radical act of empathy, and her fateful encounter with an intriguing man who changes the course of her life. Carolyn Forché is twenty-seven when the mysterious stranger appears on her doorstep. The relative of a friend, he is a charming polymath with a mind as seemingly disordered as it is brilliant. She’s heard rumors from her friend about who he might be: a lone wolf, a communist, a CIA operative, a sharpshooter, a revolutionary, a small coffee farmer, but according to her, no one seemed to know for certain. He has driven from El Salvador to invite Forché to visit and learn about his country.
