We are look forward to seeing those of you who have registered for the reception
at the National Museum of the American Indian: with over 500 alums and friends
in attendance it will be the largest Stanford Alumni Event in the East this
year! Extra thanks go to the volunteers who have stepped up to lend a hand!.
Join us this spring on the softball field, watching the Washington Nationals
at one of their opening games, or planning an adventure at the Gold Cup Steeple
Chase! While we hope to see you soon, what is paramount is for you know that
WDCSA is here as a resource for you, and will continue to be your link to

We are proud to host a Stanford reception and discussion with Stanford Trustee
Rick West, JD ’71, Founding Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of
the American Indian.
Of Cheyenne Indian heritage, Rick’s appointment as the Founding Director
of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in 1990 is a tribute
to his own life, dedicated to working with American Indians, Alaskan Natives,
and Native Hawaiians.

8:00 – 9:00 p.m. Guests are welcome to view the museum exhibit: cultural
interpreters will be available all evening to answer questions and conduct

Anacostia River Cleanup
Earth Day, Saturday Apr 16, 2005
8:00 am – 2:00 pm
Join the D.C. Cardinal Young Alums in helping to restore the Anacostia River!
Then, enjoy the free Earth Day celebration at Bladensburg Waterfront Park,
MD, which will include a picnic lunch, live local music, dancing and drumming,
and environmental displays.
Gloves and bags will be provided at the cleanup sites. Plan to get dirty
and/or muddy. Canoes and motorized boats will serve as shuttles along the
river.

Women’s Lacrosse – Loyola

The Stanford women’s lacrosse team takes on Loyola at Geppi-Aikens Field
at Loyola in Baltimore. Following the game, there will be an on-the-field
reception where you can meet the players and coaches, their families and friends,
and Stanford alums. 10 of the 25 Stanford players are from Maryland – senior
Kelsey Twist; juniors Sarah Bach, Megan Burker, Kinsey Morrison and Nyerr
Parham; sophomores Michelle DeChant and Carly Posner, and frosh Katherine
Fox, Bri Ned, Laura Shane, and Alicia and Amanda Soto – and from McLean, Virginia

Virginia Gold Cup

The U of M Alumni Club of Washington, DC is sponsoring a Tent on University
Row this year, along with Alumni Clubs from Stanford, University of Colorado,
Colorado State, Iowa, and Georgetown. We have discounted, all-inclusive tickets
available for this great event – so please sign up as soon as possible.
Now in its 78th year, the Virginia Gold Cup (informally known as the "Spring
Gold Cup") attracts over 50,000 people to see the finest horses in America
and Europe. Tent spaces are sold out long before race time! Steeped in history
and covered as an equestrian event of considerable national renown, Gold Cup
is both a sports event and a grand social gathering in the hills of Virginia
horse country.
The Bus+Tent package includes round-trip bus transportation from Ballston,
food and open bar at University Row, plus access to all other University Row
tents, the common terrace area, and the common rail area. The early bird price
(first 30 to sign up before April 10) is $80, after that, the next 30 tickets
sold before April 20 will be at a discounted price of $85 per person. After
April 20th, the package prices will increase to $90. This compares to the
regular price of $110.

Stanford Professor David Victor: “Energy Policy
and Climate Change: What Next for America?”

With gasoline prices soaring, what are the prospects for America’s
energy future? Please come hear David Victor, Director of Stanford’s
Program on Energy and Sustainable Development, discuss U.S. energy policy
and the management of global climate change.
Prof. Victor teaches in the Political Science Department and the Law School
at Stanford. Previously, he directed the Science and Technology program at
the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, where he remains Adjunct Senior
Fellow. He has published several books on these topics and is the author of
more than 100 essays and articles, which have been printed in the The New
York Times, The Washington Post, The Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, and
Scientific American.
The evening will begin with a 6:30 reception; Prof. Victor will speak from
7:00-8:00 p.m., including Q&A.

Russia and Democratic Transition

You are cordially invited to a talk and reception with Dr. Michael McFaul,
Stanford Associate Professor of Political Science, speaking on Russia: Between
Dictatorship and Democracy, and Other Democratic Transitions.
Dr. McFaul is an expert on U.S.-Russia relations, regime change in non-democratic
states, and the current U.S. policy of promoting democracy. He co-directs
the project on democratization in Iran at the Hoover Institution.
He has written articles on Russian-U.S. affairs for major U.S. newspapers,
has appeared as a featured guest on all US networks, BBC, and as topic expert
on The Lehrer NewsHour.
Before joining the Stanford faculty, Dr. McFaul worked as Senior Associate
for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He serves as an advisor
to many non-governmental organizations, companies and government agencies.

Washington Nationals Tickets
WDCSA has purchased 4 season tickets to the Washington Nationals baseball
games at RFK Stadium. The seats are located in the 5th row of the lower left
outfield reserve section 448. All games are $8 except $10 for weekend (Friday-Sunday)
games in June, July, and August, and the Sept 21-22 Giants games.

Seats for these 2 games are $9/each (normally $15 seats) and are in the infield
upper reserved section. Section 523 is about at 3rd base, whereas 514 is close
to home plate on the first base side. If anyone who has already purchased
any of our season tickets wants to make changes as a result of these new games,
we can make a change.

StanfordFest NYC is accepting documentaries, shorts, features, animations
and experimental films for a night of films and bands showcasing Stanford
talent for the NY audience. A Stanford alum must be either the writer, director,
producer or major actor. For bands, one member must be a Stanford alum and
you must be able to perform in NYC on a night in October, date to be confirmed.
