WDCSA Board Election Results
Congratulations to Cynthia Poss '94 (Co-Vice President) and Jim Arrison '87 (Treasurer) on their reelections to the WDCSA Board!
Cynthia Poss '94
Cynthia is proud to be a board member, continuing to support a wide range of programming for our engaged alumni base. She has served as VP of WDCSA for the past two years and as VP, Secretary and Board Member of the Stanford GSB DC Chapter for over five years, helping to rejuvenate the chapter.
She is hoping to expand and strengthen partnerships with local chapters of Stanford graduate alumni chapters and other outside organizations to co-host new programs. She would also like to support younger alumni with career coaching, mentoring, and networking events as well as develop more family-friendly activities.
After graduating from the Stanford GSB (‘94), Cynthia moved to DC to work for AOL’s venture fund and never left! She has held executive positions in strategy consulting, product and program management at Kearney, Oracle, SAIC and GDIT. Jim has served as WDCSA Treasurer for 5 years. Over the past 25 years, he participated in WDCSA Board meetings regularly. In addition, he organized several WDCSA Big Game events coordinating with the D.C. Cal Berkeley club and assisted with WDCSA intercollegiate sports teams though the Capital Alumni Network.
Jim Arrison '87
Jim has served as WDCSA Treasurer for 5 years. Over the past 25 years, he participated in WDCSA Board meetings regularly. In addition, he organized several WDCSA Big Game events coordinating with the D.C. Cal Berkeley club and assisted with WDCSA intercollegiate sports teams though the Capital Alumni Network.
Outside WDCSA, he is a former Partner with a global consulting firm specializing in business transformation. He began a second career focused on alternative asset valuation and management. This includes owning and breeding thoroughbred racehorses while developing proprietary models and materials to aid in projecting auction prices and value. He continues to examine the applicability of these materials for users in other fields ranging from professional sports franchises healthcare.
WDCSA Softball Sign-up
Join the Stanford Capitol Alumni Network (CAN) softball team this summer! The coed softball season typically stretches from April to July, with a tournament in August. We typically play at the West Potomac Park softball fields on Saturday mornings, although there are occasional weekday evening games. Register through this event to join the team email list and receive updates about upcoming games. No softball experience required and all are welcome!
WDCSA is subsidizing the season, so registration is free to paid-WDCSA members!

Insider’s View with Andrew Luck, '12, MA '23

Washington DC Stanford Association invites you to a virtual Insider’s View conversation with Stanford Football General Manager Andrew Luck, ’12, MA '23.
This is a unique opportunity to engage with Luck on the future of Stanford football, including the recent football coaching changes and Stanford's entry into the ACC athletic conference.
Last November, Luck was named Stanford's Football General Manager. Before his recent appointment, Luck was one of the most transformative student-athletes in school history and produced a record-setting collegiate career while leading the Cardinal to national prominence.
A 2012 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in architectural design who returned to Stanford to finish his master’s degree in education in 2023, Luck led the Cardinal to a 31-7 overall record from 2009-11 after redshirting the 2008 campaign. Luck was a two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up (2010-11) and concluded the 2011 season as recipient of the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Foundation Player of the Year Award and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
Luck was selected as the No. 1 overall pick of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2012 NFL Draft, competing for seven seasons from 2012-18. Earning Pro Bowl honors in each of his first three seasons and four overall, Luck led the NFL in passing touchdowns (40) in 2014 and was named the league’s Comeback Player of the Year in 2018.

The book for May is Kairos, by Jenny Erpenbeck; New Directions, 2023. Available in hardcover, paperback, audiobook, and Kindle editions.
Kairos tells the story of the romance begun in East Berlin at the end of the 1980s when nineteen-year-old Katharina meets by chance a married writer in his fifties named Hans. Their passionate, yet difficult long-running affair takes place against the background of the declining German Democratic Republic, through the upheavals wrought by its dissolution in 1989, and then what comes after. Erpenbeck describes the path of two lovers, as Katharina grows up and tries to come to terms with a not-always-ideal romance, even as a whole world, with its own ideology, disappears. Winner of 2024 International Booker Prize.

We are reading Blood on the Forge by William Attaway, published in 1941, a story of the Great Migration from the Jim Crow South. The story “follows the three Moss brothers, who flee the rural South to work in industries up North. Delivered by day into the searing inferno of the steel mills, by night they encounter a world of surreal devastation, crowded with dogfighters, whores, cripples, strikers, and scabs. Keenly sensitive to character, prophetic in its depiction of environmental degradation and globalized labor, Attaway’s novel is an unprecedented confrontation with the realities of American life, offering an apocalyptic vision of the melting pot not as an icon of hope but as an instrument of destruction.” (From book cover)
