WDCSA Call for Executive Board Candidates
WDCSA is led by a team of four officers: President, two Co-Vice Presidents, and Treasurer. We are seeking candidates for two offices, one of the VPs and Treasurer, for a term of two years. The other two officers are serving terms that will end this year: our staggered terms encourages continuity when people leave office. The following describes the position responsibilities:
VICE PRESIDENT
(There are two Co-Vice Presidents: the following describes their collective responsibility)
- Conducts, facilitates monthly planning meetings in absence of President
- Brings or arranges for snacks and beverages for in-person meetings
- Responsible for preparing and posting minutes of meetings
- Chairs events of special interest, ongoing activities
- Steps in to fill an absent presidential position and is favorable to running for President during the subsequent cycle
- Attends Board meetings, keeps weekly communication with President
- Serves the President on special assignments
TREASURER
- Manages the WDCSA bank account, accounting for revenue and expenses
- Tracks revenue that is received through online systems managed by SAA
- Deposits checks as they are received
- Pays event and other expenses as is approved by the Executive, Planning Committee and/or event leaders, as appropriate
- Creates and provides SAA with quarterly reports of WDCSA activity.
- Meets with other club Treasurers to improve SAA and club reporting.
- Serves as the liaison with the Stanford Alumni Association financial manager who works with clubs
- Provides a financial update for WDCSA planning meetings
- Attends both the Executive Committee meetings and Planning Committee meetings
If you are interested in running for one of the two positions, email a short Bio and Statement of Interest that is 100-150 words in length to Risa Shimoda at risa@theshimodagroup.com by Friday, February 14th. The polls will open the following week, and voting instructions will be emailed to WDCSA members. The online voting will be open until February 28th, 2025.

Come join other WDCSA folks to celebrate the Lunar New Year with dim sum! Attendees are responsible for the costs of their food. Individual tables generally split the checks among themselves. Expect to spend ~$30-45.

Insider's View with Howard Wolf, '80

Virtual Meeting
The Washington DC Stanford Association welcomes you to attend a conversation with Stanford Alumni Association president Howard Wolf, ’80.
This virtual meeting will offer a unique opportunity to engage with Howard on topics that matter to you and the broader Stanford community, including the start of a new era with university president Jonathan Levin, ’94 PhD, and Stanford's entry into the ACC athletic conference.
Howard Wolf, who has led the Stanford Alumni Association and its staff since 2001, earned his bachelor's degree in psychology, with distinction, from Stanford in 1980 and his MBA from Harvard in 1985.
Before his appointment as Vice President for Alumni Affairs and President of the Stanford Alumni Association, he worked as both an entrepreneur and business manager in the publishing and commercial real estate development and management industries. An active alum and volunteer, as well as an avid Stanford athletics fan, he received the Stanford Associates Outstanding Achievement Award in 2000.

Washington DC Book Club Discussion

The book for our March meeting is The Vegetarian: A Novel, by Han Kang (translated by Deborah Smith); Random House, 2024, 208 pages. Available in hardcover, paperback, audiobook, and Kindle editions.
Yeong-hye, a middle-aged Korean woman, and her husband lived an ordinary, controlled life. But she began to have nightmares—invasive images of blood and brutality—that tortured her, driving her to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. The vegetarian herself is silent in this novel. Her story is instead told in three different narratives by her husband, her brother-in-law, and her older sister. Their different reactions, from abhorrence to sexual fascination to poisonous envy, stand in sharp contrast to the woman’s own mute refusal to back down or to admit to any guilt for the shame she has brought to her family.

We are reading The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd. What is the purpose of a map?
