The Cardinal Class of 2003 is Off and Running; the WDCSA Needs Your Help

After a bit of struggling to conjure up a theme for this note
(trying like crazy to avoid anything Y2K-related), I decided to fall back on an
old adage and just stick to the facts. So here are some facts as I know them:

On Sunday, August 29th, the Washington area contingent of this year’s freshman class
was welcomed at a get together coordinated by the Parents’ Committee, and again
hosted by Gregg Murphy and his family. Marguerite Sullivan, Rosalia Miller, and
their group did their normal superb job of planning an event that is not only a lot
of fun, but also very informative.

By arranging to have the class members and their families meet and get to know each
other, as well as share some sage advice from a number of upperclassmen, the class of
2003 got a great welcome and send-off. Many thanks again to Marguerite, Rosalia,
Gregg, and the other volunteers that made the first event of the year a
resounding success, and a great introduction for the newest members of the
Washington, D.C., Stanford community.

Which segues neatly in to the second subject-volunteers. The WDCSA is a purely
volunteer organization. Everything we do-from the newsletter to the listserv to the
planning and coordination of each of our many events-is the direct and sole result of
the dedicated efforts of our members. And as energetic and talented as our current
set of volunteers are (and they most certainly are both), we are always in need of
additional help so that the WDCSA can continue to provide meaningful benefits to our
membership.

Toward this end, on Wednesday, September 8th, we will be holding an open house at the
Stanford in Washington campus, from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. We ask anyone who is interested
in participating in the WDCSA to attend, talk to members of the current board, share
your ideas, and most importantly, get involved. It doesn’t have to take a lot of
time, it’s not difficult, you’ll have a lot of fun, and you’ll earn the appreciation
of the entire WDCSA. So please come on by SIW, say hi, and join in. Last year we
were able to initiate a very popular series of get-togethers on the Second Thursday
of each month. This year, we will rename and reschedule these happy hours to be
Third Thursdays. We’ve also received an occasional request for more family-oriented
events. Understanding that people with families usually have little free time, we
still would hope to get some good ideas and assistance in arranging an event or two
with families/children in mind.

Our overall intent this year is to continue everything we’ve done right in the past,
fix those things that weren’t perfect, and attempt to add a few tems not tried
before. So the breakfast briefings will continue, as will Third Thursdays, the opera,
the Big Game party-all our popular events. We also have an embassy visit planned,
a faculty visit in the spring, and a couple of other items up our sleeves. But, we
do need your support. Hope to see you on Wednesday.

President, WDCSA

Third Thursdays

Thursday, September 16, 1999

6:30 – 8:30 P.M.

This year we’re having happy hour events on the third Thursday of every month to
allow us to coordinate our events with some of the evening gallery openings around
the city. This month we’re meeting at the Big Hunt at 1345 Connecticut Avenue, NW.
Take the Red Line Metro to Dupont Circle. Exit at 19th and N, and walk south on

all drinks are $1 off. Meet us at the rooftop patio. For more information, or to
offer suggestions on locations, contact Callista Chen at (202) 319-1841 or

Coach Willingham and the team have an extremely challenging schedule this year,

November 13 Arizona State Tempe 6:30 P.M.

No doubt we will be having some informal gatherings of the faithful for at least a
few of the televised games-stay tuned. And, as always, we will be co-sponsoring a Big
Game get together with the Cal alums-mark your calendars for November 20 and watch for
details in the November newsletter. The September 4 game against Texas is not
available on local network television; some alumni will be gathering at Mr. Day’s
Sports Bar. Take the Red Line Metro to Dupont Circle, take the south exit, walk
south on 19th Street past M Street, and turn left into the alley halfway down the
block. Mr. Days will be on your right. The phone number for Mr. Days is (202)

Modern Drama Discussion Group
September 13 R.U.R. (discussion)
September 25 R.U.R. (performance)

In September the Modern Drama Discussion Group will greet the new millennium with a
new series, “Time and Memory: Looking Forward, Looking Back.” The future begins with
a farcical fantasy about rebellious robots, R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) (1921),
by Czech playwright Karel Capek. The first work of art to portray mass-produced
robots, R.U.R. spawned a whole genre of literature and film. The drama group will
discuss R.U.R. 7:30-9:30 P.M. Monday September 13 (dinner at 6:30) at Luna Books,
1633 P St., NW. Director John Spitzer will join our discussion. To RSVP for the
discussion call Betty Byrne BS’55 (202-483-4048). The drama group will attend
R.U.R. at 7:30 P.M. Saturday September 25 at the DC Arts Center, 2438 18th St., NW
(dinner 5:30 P.M. at Star of Siam, 2446 18th St., NW). Tickets are $13. For tickets
call or e-mail Robin Larkin (301-897-9314 & larkinr@erols.com). Although we will not
advertise these events every month, you can check the drama group website at
www.footlightsdc.org
